This comprehensive class will teach you fundamental leatherworking skills and techniques that you can apply to the creation of various leather projects. We’ll walk you through the most common leather tools such as:

  • Rivet & snap setters
  • Edge bevelers
  • Edge bevelers
  • Thonging chisels
  • And more!

We’ll discuss typical leather hardware and what types of leather to use them on. Learn how to choose the correctly sized rivets for a project and how to set them. You will walk away from this class feeling confident and ready to tackle your first or next leather project!

Beginning Leather Tooling

Want to carve intricate patterns into your leather creations but don’t know where to start? Beginning tooling is your entry point to beautiful works of leather art!

Leather tooling or carving is the process of cutting or stamping the surface of leather to create 3 dimensional shapes and designs.

You’ll learn to use basic tools, swivel knives, leather dyes & finishes, and more. By the end of the class you’ll have used these tools to create a lovely western-style flower. Concepts covered include:

  • Selecting the appropriate leather for your project
  • Swivel knife use and technique
  • 6 basic tooling tools
  • Basic dye & finish use, and how to use them to create depth

Want to create a leather project that really pops but not sure how to achieve the color you want? Dyes and finishes are the answer.

In this comprehensive class you’ll learn how to properly use:

  • Water stains
  • Antique gels
  • Dyes
  • Paints
  • So much more!

We’ll cover a multitude of ways to use leather finishes & edge paints to create a unique look for your projects.

The first step in breaking the rules is learning what they are! After the basics, we’ll dive in deeper - learning how to mix and create custom colors to open up even more possibilities. Sign up now, beginners welcome!

Important information for all classes:

  • Please make sure to arrive 10-15 minutes early and sign our general release of liability agreement.
  • Masks must be worn correctly while inside the facility.
  • Do not come into the Lab if you have a cough, fever, or feel sick in the past 14 days.
  • Please wear shop-appropriate clothing: close-toed shoes, no loose or dangling jewelry, and tie back long hair. What you wear will likely get dirty.
